Jim is a former partner in Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C. in Boston, Massachusetts, where he practiced civil litigation. Jim is of counsel to LGP. He received his A.B from Washington University in St. Louis in 1980 where he graduated summa cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1986 where he graduated magna cum laude and was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. From 1987-1989, he was law clerk to the Honorable William G. Young, Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He also served as Special Assistant to the President of the American Bar Association from 1989 to 1991. In 1991, Jim became an associate at Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C., and he became a partner in 1998.
Jim is a civil litigator, practicing in the areas of real property, business, contract, insurance coverage, insurance defense, products liability defense, general tort defense and appellate practice. Jim has published numerous law review articles and recently served as reporter to the American Bar Association with respect to its Standards for the Custody, Placement and Care; Legal Representation; And Adjudication of Unaccompanied Alien Children in the United States. The Standards were adopted by the American Bar Association’s policy-making House of Delegate in 2004.
Jim is a member of the American Bar Association, a former chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyer Referral and Information Services, and a former member of the ABA President’s Task Force on External Communications. He is presently the chair of the Standing Committee’s Program of Assistance and Review which provides technical support for state and local bar associations across the country. Jim is also an acclaimed and award-winning playwright, with numerous productions of his plays to his credit. Jim and his family reside in Northampton.
